California passes 1st-in-nation train emissions rules

By Sophie Austin | Associated Press/Report for AmericaSACRAMENTO, Calif. — Every day, locomotives pull rail cars filled with food, lumber, oil and other products through railyards near neighborhoods in Oakland, Commerce, San Bernadino and other California cities. They run on diesel, a more powerful fuel than gasoline, and burning all that diesel produces pollution that is harmful for people who live nearby, as well as greenhouse gases. California’s Air Resources Board is trying to change that. The agency voted Thursday to approve a rule banning the use of locomotive engines more than 23 years old by 2030 and increasing the use of zero-emissions technology to transport freight from ports and throughout railyards. The rule would also ban locomotives in the state from idling longer than 30 minutes if they are equipped with an automatic shutoff.California would have to get authorization from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to move forward with the rule, which would be stric...

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- The decision to play Friday's Game 6 of the NBA First Round Playoff series between the Golden State Warriors and the Sacramento Kings at 5 p.m. Friday has raised a few eyebrows. "5pm local start time for Warriors-Kings is silly," one user tweeted. "Why would the NBA do that? We ain't even off of work yet." Is growing Las Vegas big enough for 3 major pro teams? "I don't think theres anyway the Warriors lose this series but I could see them losing Game 6. Especially since I think it's at 5pm?" tweeted another. One Bay Area transit agency has even gone as far as to suggest that the game's dubious scheduling could be part of a "conspiracy" on behalf of the league."We're aware that in its conspiracy to kneecap the Warriors' dynasty, the NBA has scheduled Friday's Game 6 for 5:00 p.m. in hopes fans will arrive late," the SF Bay Ferry service tweeted on Thursday."Not on our watch," the tweet continued. Shocking Vote by Oklahoma Parole Board Clears the Way for Richard Glossip’s Execution

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 22:49:11 GMT

Three weeks ago, Richard Glossip was contemplating a possible future outside prison walls. In an extraordinary move, the Oklahoma attorney general had filed a motion with the state’s Court of Criminal Appeals asking that Glossip’s conviction and death sentence be overturned. If granted, the request would send his case back to the district court for a new trial — or a plea deal. After more than two decades in prison for a crime he insists he did not commit, Glossip was imagining life with his wife in Oklahoma City. But in a stunning rebuke, the court rejected the attorney general’s request, triggering the 35-day protocol that precedes an execution. Perhaps most critical: a hearing on April 26 before the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board, whose members are empowered to recommend clemency to the governor, serving as a final check against a wrongful execution. There was every reason to expect the board would vote to spare Glossip’s life. Among the witnesses who appeared on Glossip’s behalf...
