BANGKOK (AP) — A prominent Thai human rights lawyer was convicted on Tuesday of insulting the monarchy and sentenced to four years in prison, the first conviction under a controversial law guarding the royal institution since a civilian government took office after years of military-backed rule.Arnon Nampa was found guilty of defaming King Maha Vajiralongkorn during a student-led rally on Oct. 14, 2020, that commemorated a popular uprising in 1973 that led to the fall of a decade-long military dictatorship. He was also fined 20,000 baht ($550) for violating an emergency decree banning large public gatherings during the coronavirus pandemic.Arnon, 39, still faces 13 more cases under the lese majeste law, which makes insulting the monarch, his immediate family and the regent punishable by up to 15 years in prison. The court said in its ruling Tuesday that Arnon had declared at the rally that if it were dispersed, it would be at the order of King Maha Vajiralongkon. It said that stateme...

SF Giants ace dismisses Cy Young talk, wants wins and ‘big changes’ instead

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:11:18 GMT

SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Logan Webb believes Blake Snell should win the National League Cy Young Award this year. Why is that, Webb was asked.“Because he has a 2.30 (ERA), a 2.20, whatever it is,” Webb said of the San Diego Padres’ left-hander. “That’s pretty good.”Snell now has an MLB-leading 2.25 ERA after his exceptional performance Monday against the Giants, as he struck out seven over six scoreless innings. He’s also fourth with 234 strikeouts and has a solid 14-9 record for a Padres team that’s been well out of the playoff picture almost all season. But Webb outshined Snell in a terrific pitcher’s duel at Oracle Park and a rare highlight for the Giants this month. In the second complete game of his career, with both coming this season, Webb allowed nine hits but struck out seven as he gave the Giants a chance to come back and earn a 2-1 win, keeping their faint playoff hopes alive for at least another day.“It’s kind of hard trying to go pitch f...

Coach McVay bemoans ‘self-inflicted wounds’ in Los Angeles Rams 19-16 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:11:18 GMT

CINCINNATI (AP) — Getting into the end zone seemed tougher for the Los Angeles Rams when it mattered most on Monday night. The Rams suffered a 19-16 loss to the Bengals in their first regular-season rematch of the Super Bowl after the 2021 season. While the Aaron Donald-led defense kept Cincinnati without a touchdown in the first half, the Rams’ offense behind a young, banged up offensive line couldn’t capitalize.“I think the biggest thing for us tonight was missed opportunities early in the game in the red zone,” quarterback Matthew Stafford said. “If we can come away with some sevens there it’s probably a little bit of a different game later on.” The Rams (1-2) were 1-of-4 in their red zone trips. Their lone touchdown came in the final two minutes of the game when Tutu Atwell went in from the 1-yard line to close the deficit to three points, but the ensuing onside kick was unsuccessful.Stafford got Los Angeles off to a good start going 2 for 2 to begin the game and Atwe...

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Logan Webb pitched his second complete game this season and pinch-hitter Michael Conforto delivered a two-run single in the eighth inning to lift the San Francisco Giants over the San Diego Padres 2-1 on Monday night in a matchup of teams clinging to slim playoff hopes.Blake Snell tossed six shutout innings in his latest terrific start for the Padres, lowering his major league-best ERA to 2.25 as the left-hander makes a final push for the NL Cy Young Award.Webb will probably get some votes, too, especially after what he did against the Padres. The game marked his 24th quality start this season — tops in the majors, according to the Giants. Webb, whose first career complete game was a shutout of Colorado on July 9, also leads the big leagues with 216 innings pitched.“This is a pretty significant statement game when you’re going up against another Cy Young Award candidate,” San Francisco manager Gabe Kapler said. “He was totally efficient, totally in control.
